Choose the Right Power Generator for Home Use

When severe weather strikes, you have a lot of things to worry about. Most all of try to be prepared for the “what ifs”. What if our power goes out? What if you must go days without charging our cell phone or showering? If the power goes out at our home, will we be able to eat food in a nearby city? Considering some storms attack without a lot of warning, wouldn’t it be best to simply know that you and your family will have the important things before they hit? If so, you are not alone. It is one of the main reasons that so many people are choosing to keep a generator close by. Now, you can as well. You simply have to choose the right power generator for home use.

One of the first things you will notice when you start searching for a home generator is that no two are identical when it comes to comparing models and manufacturers. They may have different features and different power ratings, different plug styles, and may even use different types of gas. These aspects will need to be considered before you settle on a generator for your home.

Some generators are powered by natural gas, while others use diesel or regular gasoline. You need to know what the availability will be for the type of gas that you choose if you are dealing with a major weather event. If your area has a limited supply of diesel, you may need to stay away from it. The same is true for natural gas. Most people choose gasoline powered generators because it is available at every gas station.

Every generator will also have starting amps and running amps listed. It is important that you pay close attention to the numbers. The starting amps will indicate the amount of power that it will produce the second you fire it up. This is designed to get all your important things, like stoves and refrigerators, up and running quickly. From there, you have the running amps, which is designed to keep power flowing to your home. To know how much power you need, you will have to figure out what you want to run and what amount of amps it will take to keep it running.

Beyond that, you have different manufacturers. In most cases, you come out ahead to choose cheaper brand names, but not everyone wants to choose generic brands because of parts availability. You have to choose what is best for your home.
